Wiring an Amplifier
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
Car amp
Car audio wiring
Knife
Masking tape
Pliers
1
Choose an amplifier that properly matches the power needs of your new car stereo.
2
To safeguard your equipment, place your amp in the trunk of your vehicle, close to the subwoofer box.
3
Install a fuse a few inches from the amplifier. Make sure the fuse is the right size for your amplifier. If the fuse is too large, you run the risk of causing a fire and doing permanent damage to your speakers and your car.
4
Take the red positive wire and connect it to the positive terminal on the car battery. Run the wire around the car's engine bay, through the firewall and underneath the car's carpet and connect it to the fuse.
5
Take the black ground wire and connect it to the negative power terminal on your amplifier. Drill a hole in the trunk and bolt the ground wire down to the exposed metal. Make sure the metal is free of dirt and rust to ensure your amp works correctly.
6
Connect wires to the RCA jacks in your car stereo head unit. Run these wires on the opposite sides from the power wires you just ran to the battery and amp and plug them into your amplifier.
7
Connect your new car audio speakers to your amplifier. Keep the wires separated from the other two sets of wires you've installed to avoid any fire hazards. Install a power cable from your amp to your head unit that will allow you to switch the amp on and off
